OPTIONAL RULE # 1

The optional rule # 1 changes only the section on page 14 "How to play" of the basic rules.
All the other rules are unchanged.

INTRODUCTION

In the optional rule # 1 is added a new area: the WAITING AREA. This is a 4 blue (river) spaces imaginary area, ideally placed in the middle of the table (close to the animal deck).
In this area are placed the animals waiting to be taken by the players.
The waiting area doesn’t correspond to a effective territory card.

The animal cards are placed into the waiting area according to the basic rules:
• only 4 animals can be placed into the waiting area (as there are 4 spaces),
• only 1 type of carnivore animal can be placed into the waiting area (lion and leopard can’t stay together),
• only 1 type of aquatic animal can be placed into the waiting area (hippopotamus and crocodile can’t stay together),
• only 1 type of pachyderm can be placed into the waiting area (elephant and rhinoceros can’t stay together),
• it is not possible to place an herbivore animal and a crocodile/carnivore animal together into the waiting area (herbivore animals and crocodiles/carnivore animals can’t stay together),
• only 2 pachyderms can be placed into the waiting area (the waiting area has 4 spaces).

NATURE RESERVE SET UP

The nature reserve is set up according to the basic rules.
There is only 1 difference: 1 animal card is placed face up in the middle of the table, close to the animal deck. This animal card represents the first animal in the waiting area.

ROUND GAME

The Head Ranger starts. The other players will follow (clockwise).

At the beginning of his turn, the player draws a card from the animal deck (the new animal).
Then he MUST perform one of the 3 following actions:

1 – KEEP THE NEW ANIMAL
He places the new animal in his own reserve. The player can choose this action only if the animal can be placed into the reserve. So, he can’t take the animal and place it directly in the "cemetery".

2 – PLACE THE NEW ANIMAL IN THE WAITING AREA
He places the new animal into the waiting area according to the rules described above. If the new animal can’t be placed into the waiting area, the action can’t be chosen.

3 – EMPTY THE WAITING AREA
The player takes all the animals from the waiting area and he places them in his own reserve (the animals are placed as the player prefers) or in the "cemetery".
The new animal goes to the waiting area.

When the player has performed his action, the turn of the player on his left begins.

EXAMPLE

In the waiting area there are 2 leopards and 1 crocodile.

The acting player takes the top card from the animal deck: it is a hippopotamus.
In his reserve there aren’t blue free spaces for the hippopotamus. Therefore the action 1 can’t be chosen (the player can’t place the new animal directly in the "cemetery").
In the waiting area there are only 3 animals; then there is still a free available space. But in the waiting area there is already a crocodile: the hippopotamus can’t stay together with it. So the action 2 can’t be chosen.
The player must choose the action 3. He takes the 2 leopards and the crocodile from the waiting area and tries to place them into his own reserve (or in the "cemetery").
The hippopotamus stays alone in the waiting area.
